Commemoration of Prof. Fu Ssu-nien and the 99th Anniversary of the May Fourth Movement

4 May the 107th year of the Republic (2018)

At 2pm on Friday 4 May in the 107th year of the Republic (2018), the Allegiance to the National Flag Committee of Sung Tao Society held the Commemoration of Prof. Fu Ssu-nien (傅斯年校長) and the 99th Anniversary of the May Fourth Movement at Fu Garden in the National Taiwan University. 

The May Fourth Movement was an event that took place on 4 May 1919, when students in Peking realized that the Paris Peace Conference had failed China and the partition of Tsingtao was irrevocable, they banded together and vowed to reverse the predicament. Their protest later evolved into a nationwide movement. The night before 4 May 1919, Mr. Fu Ssu-nien was elected one of the twenty student leaders from the National Peking University. He later became the Acting President of the National Peking University. When mainland China fell to the communists, he became the President of the National Taiwan University.

The programme of the Commemoration consisted: 

1. Speeches by special guests.
2. Ceremony of chiming the Fu Bell twenty one times.
3. The nephew of Prof. Fu Ssu-nien, Mr. Fu Le-chih paid respect at the Mausoleum.
4. Approximately 3,000 guests paid respect at the Mausoleum. The floral arrangement was designed by Mr. Ch’en Chün-t’ien (陳君天先生), including a pair of fifteen meter couplets outside the front gate of the University. It reads:

No to sinister force blocking
University Presidential appointment,
The Minister of Education to resign.

At the time, the Ministry of Education refused to approve the elected President of the National Taiwan University, Prof. Kuan Chung-ming (管中閔校長), on party political lines.
