Commemoration of the 100th Anniversary of the May Fourth Movement

4 May the 108th year of the Republic (2019)

At 2pm on Saturday 4 May in the 108th year of the Republic (2019), the Allegiance to the National Flag Committee of Sung Tao Society held the Commemoration of the 100th Anniversary of the May Fourth Movement at the Sun Yun-suan Memorial Museum. 

The May Fourth Movement was an event that happened on 4 May 1919, when students in Peking realized that the Paris Peace Conference had failed China and the partition of Tsingtao by Japan was irrevocable, they banded together and vowed to reverse the predicament. Their protest later evolved into a nationwide movement. 

At the Commemoration, the speakers included Mr. Wu Shih-wen (伍世文部長), former Minister of Defense; and Mr. Wu Tun-i (吳敦義主席), Chairman of the Chinese Kuomintang. Speakers at the panel were Mr. Fu Le-chih (傅樂治先生); Mr. Fu Li-chung (符立中先生); Ms. Chang Hsiao-feng (張曉風立委), former Legislator; Mr. Chou Yü-shan (周玉山委員), Member of the Examination Yuan; Mr. Roy Delbyck (戴銳律師) and Mr. Soong Shu Kong (宋緒康先生). At the event, the book The Struggle to Reverse Destiny-Commemoration of the 100th Anniversary of the May Fourth Movement by Mr. Soong Shu Kong was also launched.

        國族相競寡有道,弱者乞存,強者肆掠。政事腐穢未盡涯,權奸禍國,蒼黎塗炭。盰衡青史,洵恆軌覆轍。外患內亂既熾,國亡無時。

        溯民國三年,日寇佔青島,天下徒知憂傷憤悻,終無所為。民國八年,巴黎和會肇,乃鑑列強之蠻橫,日寇之險詐,公義之蕩然澌滅。和會節節失利,恤國之義,笞韃久憊人心,驅策四方意氣,仰國士殫力救衰。

        時吾國與會之外交家滔滔激辦,驚動異邦,秉修條約,以文字利病據爭。會外之政治家則督促蹉談,凡遇蹶挫頓折,皆出電掲告海內,不啻醒世晨鐘。學術領袖,慷慨少年,剛腸熱血,悲國土之淪胥,遂於五月四日召集三千學子,誓討國賊,矢抗強權。學潮方興,教育家輔推波瀾,周旋政壇,伸援救贖陷身牢獄之學子。一時風臻,卒共闢拒簽和約之奇功。

       風俗遷變,庶難於春秋幾迭間,窺覷其全形果效。後十八年,舉國奮決抗戰,人心趨固,誠萌於斯。

        劫難踵接,大盜竊國。民國八年之國士,雖寄身顛沛板蕩數十載,匡時救衰之初衷,未嘗摧易。至浮海一隅,生死繫正朔之存亡,乃爾完竣一代節義。

        愴懷世變,瞻慕典模,勝嘆迴天志業之未竟,是以名書。
