Taiwan Retrocession Day

On 15 August in the 34th year of the Republic (1945), Japan declared unconditional surrender to the Allies. On 2 September, Japanese representatives signed the Instrument of Surrender on board the USS Missouri. As for the Chinese theatre of war, Japan surrendered on 9 September in Nanking. In order to facilitate the surrender of Japanese troops all over China, the Chinese Army designated sixteen surrender zones. Taiwan and P’eng-hu belonged to the sixteenth zone, the place of surrender was at the Taipei K’ung-hui Hall, now known as Taipei Chung-shan Hall. The Chinese chief representative at the surrender ceremony was Ch’en I (陳儀) and the Japanese chief representative at the surrender ceremony was Rikichi Ando. The surrender ceremony in Taiwan and P’eng-hu took place at 10 am on 25 October in the 34th year of the Republic (1945). In the following year, the Taiwan Provincial Government designated 25 October as Taiwan Retrocession Day.

In the 20th year of the Kuang-hsü reign, the Pai-yang Fleet of China was defeated by the Japanese navy. In the following year, the Treaty of Maguan was signed. Liao-t’ung Peninsular, Taiwan and the adjacent Islands, P’eng-hu and the adjacent Islands were ceded to Japan. After China’s victory in the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, the Republic of China recovered the territories lost to Japan in the Ch’ing Dynasty. Taiwan and the adjacent Islands were finally freed from fifty years of colonization.
