Armed Forces Day

3 September

On 15 August in the 34th year of the Republic (1945), Japan declared unconditional surrender to the Allies. On 2 September, Japanese representatives signed the Instrument of Surrender on board the USS Missouri. As for the Chinese theatre of war, Japan surrendered on 9 September in Nanking. In the 35th year of the Republic (1946), the government of the Republic of China decreed 3 September to be the Memorial Day of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression. In the 55th year of the Republic (1966), the Ministry of Defense designated the Memorial Day of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression as Armed Forces Day.

The 109th year of the Republic (2020) was the 75th Victory Anniversary of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression. The commemoration events organized by the Government and the Ministry of Defense were muted, affecting society at large. In view of this, the Allegiance to the National Flag Committee of Sung Tao Society launched the Online Exhibition of Artefacts from the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression from 14 August to 3 September.

A few hundred rare artefacts including calligraphy, letters, documents, photographs and films are displayed on our Website, Facebook and IG. It is hoped that the Online Exhibition can be of value to modern history education. In a time of disruption and chaos, this is a means to reinvigorate patriotism and honour the past.
